Treatment Philosophy
My years of experience working with clients have shown me that our troubles often develop gradually over time. While medications can be helpful, they are often used as a temporary solution, without addressing the underlying issues which continue to reemerge. Based on scientific literature and my own experience, I strongly believe that medications are most effective when prescribed alongside an exploration and understanding of the root causes of our distress.
In line with this belief, I am cautious and judicious in prescribing medications alone and aim to gain a comprehensive understanding of my client’s distress, which may stem from various sources such as their current relationships, childhood upbringing, social dynamics and lifestyle. Identifying, understanding and addressing these sources can require time and financial commitment, but it is crucial for effective and sustained treatment – not just a band-aid.
If medication is the best option for my client, I will recommend it. However, if I believe medication alone will not be helpful, I will discuss why and explore alternative treatments such as psychotherapy, either alone or in conjunction with medication. In all cases, I work collaboratively with my clients, providing a diagnosis, discussing the assessment of the problem, and offering my best estimate of the frequency of treatment and visits.
